January 10, 2011 - We are trying to sail on Tuesday, 1/11 and Friday 1/14 this week. And we will be trying to sail on nice weather days throughout the month of January.
January 8, 2011 - After not sailing for almost a week it was nice to be back on a flat ocean. However, anchoring was next to impossible with almost no wind or current. We fished 17 Fathoms and had fish as soon as we dropped our lines, but the boat would not stay put. We had a few Cod today and they were nice green fish, the leaders of what is to come. Jimmy Yeoh from Parsippany, NJ had the pool with a 9 pound Cod, one of two he had and he also had his limit on Tog. Archie Stewart from Nutley, NJ also had a limit catch. It was better than our last trip, but still only fair fishing. We would have caught a lot more with better anchoring conditions.

1-13-11 Well the snow is removed and the wind is starting to die out,we will be back out on the fishing grounds tomorrow(friday).Look forward to getting back out for some more Togs,Cods, and other denizens of the deep.See ya in the morning.
1-11-11 Only had a small crowd of regulars show up today, shame because it was very nice on the water.Hit some deeper spots today looking for some larger Togs, and we did get into a couple but they won the battle with the worthy ones getting shaved off in the wreck.High hook did have two keeper Togs but most were attempting to catch some of the nice Codfish coming over the rail, along with some nice ling.High hook had four keeper Cods on that end and high hook with the ling had about 8-10.Nice day with alot of bites and some nice fish to take home.Good to see this much life on the wrecks offshore. We will be going after all these species everyday all winter long.Tomorrow is a bust, with the snow and wind we will be staying home.Next good day maybe Thursday.Check out some pics from today.
pic 1
John kept with the crabs all day and had two keepers and maybe a dozen shorts. He lost the monster though.
pic 2
Bob had both nice Codfish and some nice Ling to take home to the Mrs.
pic 3
Hambone was on the meat today with these nice Cods
pic 4
This nice pair of fish were caught on the Jig.
pic 5
The dynamic duo here(FrankandLenny)had about a dozen ling and maybe 4 keeper Codfish between them.
1-10-11 Rough, cold, and nasty is a good word to describe today. We had three or four guys with a couple of keeper blackfish each, some had one and some had none.Handful of ling, and some chucker Codfish rounded off the catch.Pool fish about 8lbs took home the money.Tomorrow on the other hand the ocean is going to be very nice with light winds.Bring some heavier tackle,we are going to hit the deeper wrecks and rocks to look for some of those Jumbo Togs we had last year around this time.We tend to see some very large fish up to 17lbs last year come off of some of these spots.Average depth will be 150ft.Even as deep as 180.Look for nice Codfish to come up also.We have the crabs,I would suggest another rod set up with a jig and grub teaser for the Codfish.Same departure time, looks like the snow will hold off until late afternoon.Any questions feel free to give me a call.See ya in the morning.
1-8-11 Nice day to be out,but the bite was a bit off.Must have gotten some colder water where we have been fishing because we did not have much of a chew today.High hook did have 3 nice Togs as you can see in these pictures below.Tommy also had a few shorts but most everyone else onboard had one or none on the keeper end.We also had a few nice Codfish come over but overall it was a tough day.Not looking good for tomorrow. Some high gusty winds are forecasted.

Ft. Lauderdale deep sea fishing has had some erratic days offshore to start our new year. One day we will catch a Sailfish or two and we have had a decent catch of Mahi-Mahi and some Kingfish a couple of days, but nestled in between the good days there have been some slower ones. On the slower days we have spent quite a bit of time targeting Kingfish as we can usually find a few willing to bite even on the toughest day. A good number of these fish are inside of 100 feet of water. When we decide to go after these Kings for an extended time frame it really is a “pound the pavement” approach to try and put some fish in the box. We have found them as shallow as 65 feet the last two days and that is abnormally shallow for our Ft. Lauderdale fishing area. There are some Hammerhead Sharks moving through just outside the reef line and we have had some fun with several sharks. Cold front on the way and we are hoping it will get some better numbers of sailfish into our front yard. Ft. Lauderdale deep sea fishing is hopefully going to take off with the cold front passing through.
This time we have a strong Ft. Lauderdale Deep Sea fishing report for you, and of course that’s good news everybody. And the best of the best is our favorite Winter target species is back in town and in good numbers. Our last two trips aboard my boats have yielded eight releases on Sailfish. Live bait is of course best and we have been sticking with that approach with either the kites or presenting our baits out of the outriggers. Get in front of the fish and you will get bit either way. At least four of the fish were over 50 # which is a big number for a Florida Sailfish. The majority of our Winter fish are typically 30 to 35 #. A fish weighing from 30 to 60 pounds will usually be 61/2 to just over 7 feet in total length. With the larger fish in our Ft. Lauderdale fishing area we have had some really great acrobatic fights. That is David in the photo (and Andrew) with a fish that was a real heavyweight. The weather has turned flat calm and warm, which is great beach weather, but can spell doom for Sailfishing, but the Marlin My Darlin already has two releases so far this morning with Capt. Kopper and 1st mate Andrew and lots of time left on the clock. Kingfishing has also improved with good numbers of hungry, but again smaller fish, inside of 70 feet. Only an occasional Wahoo right now and there are some bigger Amberjacks for anyone wanting to do some wreck fishing. More and more sharks in the area also. Take a day and do a little Ft. Lauderdale Deep Sea fishing when the Sailfish are biting, it’s a great time to fish here.

Offshore and inshore fishing Ft. Lauderdale
We are very fortunate to have both offshore fishing and inshore fishing waters off Ft. Lauderdale. When we head offshore, the weed line and or anywhere that looks fishy could be 5 to 9 miles offshore depending on where the current and best areas are to fish. With the help of birds, Man-0-War make circles when they spot a nice group of fish and of course we head right for those spots. Our offshore fishing for Mahi- Mahi has been good as well as our Wahoo fishing offshore. By using both dead Ballyhoo on the surface and deep baits, we have all the columns of the area covered. Its always a good idea to have live bait and chum when offshore Fort Lauderdale, fishing can be red hot when you have a large group of Mahi-Mahi right behind your boat and with the chum and a couple smaller Mahi kept in the water, you can have a heck of a time catching fish off our deep sea waters. Typically the depth is around 600 feet of water to 900 feet of water.
When fishing off Ft. Lauderdale inshore, we are on the reef and in about 120' to 200' feet of water. This is where a lot of our action happens and we can fish both offshore and inshore in the same trip, however it is typically on a 6 hour to really fish our South Florida waters right.
To book an deep sea fishing charter, contact Capt. Tommy Zsak at (954) 439-8106 and we can answer any questions and or reserve a day to go fishing.
Beautiful weather again in Sunny South Florida - winds out of the west northwest, 10-15 mph, temperature in the upper 60’s. Mr. Mathbellest and family from Finland chartered the Happy Day Today to do some deep see fishing in South Florida off of Ft. Lauderdale before leaving on their cruise trip to the Caribbean. Mr. Mathbellest said he was just interested in catching fish for his son, Michael, for whom he chartered the boat.
We started off trolling using two plainers with a 3 ½ drom spoon on one, a blue and white sea witch with a Bonita strip on the other and Ballyhoos for surface baits. We were trolling off of the sea buoy in Ft. Lauderdale in 120 ft. of water over one of the wrecks that in the past week had been holding King Fish. After catching a mix bag of Bonitas and King Fish, Michael said he wanted to catch something big. So we went to see if we could find a Shark in the old Shark hole. We went out to 325 ft. of water and set up our Shark baits: One bait on the bottom, one mid range and two on the surface.
Michael had a lot of patience waiting for the fish. What seemed like every two minutes, Michael would ask, “When are we going to catch one?” Finally the deep line bent over and the rod tip almost touched the water. As the line peeled off the reel at a fast rate, Mitch was pulling in the rest of the baits. We put Michael in the fighting chair and he started to live his dream. After 15 minutes his Dad came over to help Michael catch his breath. After 45 minutes of fighting the fish, Mitch grabbed a hold of the leader, bringing the Hammerhead to the side of the boat, and we all took pictures of the Shark.
As I looked over to Michael, he did not have to say a word - his face said it all. On the way in, I asked Mitch how our angler was doing and Mitch’s respond was that he was passed out on the sofa. Michael will have a good fish story to tell his school friends when he gets back home.
We headed back from our 4 hour deep sea fishing charter trip to the dock at Bahia Mar, in South Florida, Fort Lauderdale. This ends another successful and adventurous fishing excursion on the Happy Day Today with Captain Zsak.

Captain's Weekly Fishing Report
Capt. Rick Grassett's Fishing Report for 1/8/2011
AAction improved last week as Sarasota Bay waters warmed to near 60 degrees. Trout moved into shallow water and fed more aggressively due to the warmer water. Anglers fishing with me on my Action Craft flats skiff the Snook Fin-Addict, out of CB’s Saltwater Outfitters on Siesta Key, caught and released trout, reds and flounder on jigs.
Keith McClintock, Rick Andersen and Victor Feldman, all from IL, fished Sarasota Bay with me on Monday. We fished both shallow and deep areas and found the best action in 2’ to 3’ of water. We fished shallow grass and potholes along sand bars on the east side of the bay from Stephens Point to Long Bar and near Bishop Point on the west side where they caught and released more than 25 trout to 19”, 3 small reds and several flounder on CAL jigs with grub and shad tails. We used 1/16 ounce CAL jig heads to work our plastic baits over the shallow grass. We caught and released the flounder and a few ladyfish in deep channels.
I was the guest of my friend, Capt. Rick DePaiva (www.saltwaterflyfishing.org), on Tuesday to fish the fertile waters of Pine Island Sound. The lush grass flats, sand and oyster bars and mangrove shorelines are breathtaking. The only thing better is the amount of shots we had at tailing, cruising and laid up reds. An amazing fishery! If you are in the Ft. Myers, Sanibel or Captiva area give Capt. Rick a call at 239-246-8726 or e-mail flynutt@aol.com.
If you are interested in learning to fly fish or improving your skills, I will be the instructor for a CB’s Saltwater Outfitter’s Orvis-Endorsed fly fishing school on Jan. 15, 2011. Located at 1249 Stickney Point Rd., on Siesta Key in Sarasota, FL the school will cover fly casting basics, line control, shooting line and the roll cast. I will also cover leader construction, fly selection and saltwater fly fishing techniques. The course, designed for beginning and intermediate fly casters, will focus on basics but also work with intermediate casters on correcting faults and improving casting skills. Cost for the school, which will run from 9 AM to 3 PM, is $150 per person and includes the use of premium Orvis fly tackle, a text book and lunch. Contact me or CB’s Saltwater Outfitters at (941) 349-4400 or cbsoutfitters@verizon.net to make reservations.
Look for reds and trout in potholes and on shallow grass along sand bars next week, especially on sunny afternoons. Following a front, you might find fish in deeper water such as creeks and channels.
Capt. Jim Klopfer's Fishing Report for 1/8/2011
This is shaping up to be a fabulous winter for sheepshead fishing off of Siesta Key. Oyster bars having a slight drop-off and current produced plenty of sheepies and juvenile redifish, along with flounder, speckled trout, and ladyfish. A live shrimp is best for sheepshead, while a 3" Gulp Shrimp fooled many trout and reds this week. Grass flats near the Spanish Pt. produced numbers of speckled trout to 21", reds to 18", flounder, and ladyfish on rootbeer Cotee jigs. The water is cold and dirty near the passes, but the protected "backwaters" of Siesta Key are clean and clear, and full of fish!
We experienced an incredible day of fishing on Friday. We started off in the morning working bars near old Midnight Pass. We caught 50 fish in two hours, redfish, trout, sheepshead, and ladyfish on free-lined live shrimp and New Penny Gulp Shrimp on a 1/4 oz Cotee jig head. Working canals and creeks off of Siesta Key later in the day, anglers casting size 08 olive Rapala X-Raps caught a dozen snook to 30" and several jack crevelle to 6 lbs, finishing the day with several "slams". Late in the afternoon, we jumped a 30 lb tarpon on an X-Rap on a 10 lb spinning outfit. Great way to end the day!
Capt. Jack Ryan's Fishing Report for 1/10/2011
Inshore bay Trips Aboard the Sea Dog w/ Capt. Jack Ryanout of CB's had a great day fishing in Roberts Bay using live shrimp under corks, catching Redfish, Flounder, and 14 Sheepshead most being keepers. However all fish were released. That makes me a happy Captain. Tip of the week is warmer water, warmer air, and a fast moving in coming tide is the KEY to winter fishing.
Capt. Jeffri Durrance's Fishing Report for 1/9/2011
The cold fronts continue to come through but the fish continue to bite. Trout are still holding around the edges of the flats near deeper water with flounder and sheephead also in the mix. Work small jigs slowly over the bottom for best results or free lined shrimp. My favorite jigs include the DOA tiny terrrorize in motor oil color and the white eighth ounce spro jig. In cold water the smaller the better! Remember the bite can be very light.

Pelican Yacht Club Tournament 2011
Report Date: January 8, 2011
Today was the last day of the Pelican Yacht Club Tournament and also was the last day of fishing for the 2010-2011 Treasure Coast Sailfish Championship. We released 9 Sailfish on the Boneshaker which I have mated on 5 out of the last ten seasons.
We started the day 7 fish out of the lead in the tournament and 3 fish back in the championship.
We ended up coming in 2nd place in the Pelican Yacht Club Tournament with 23 releases in 3 days of fishing. We were also fortunate to end the season as the 2010-2011 Treasure Coast Sailfish Championship Champions. We had 73 releases breaking the previous 3 Tournament record by 15 fish. We won the Championship by one fish over the 2nd place boat.
Sail fishing continues to be good to excellent so pack your bags and come and get in on some of Stuart FL Sailfish Charters near Orlando and Palm Beach FL. Sail fishing shall remain good for the next 4-6 weeks.

The New Year has started out well for fishing in Key West. Sailfish are still coming up on the reef to feed on the schools of ballyhoo, (bait fish). Sailfish are also being caught offshore, both trolling and live baiting.
There have been a surprising number of dolphin, (Mahi or Dorado, not Flipper) caught over the last week, mostly due to some mild weather and a few days of South winds. Most of the Dolphin caught were fairly small, in the 3-6 lb range, perfect for table fare. There were a few big fish caught, we caught a 25lb bull on Sunday. I’d be happy with that fish in May when big dolphins are expected!
There has still been some good mackerel action along the reef and Kingfish are starting to show up. It’s a bit later than expected, but we caught some nice sized Ceros up shallow and a few Kings in the high teens over the past few days.
On Tuesday, we finally got a decent Wahoo bite. It wasn’t ballistic, we’re still due for that, but boats were consistently catching Wahoo from East to West. The strong cold front that came through on Wednesday, will probably put the kibosh on the Wahoo bite for a couple of days, but expect more fish to be caught after the seas calm a little. This weekend should be good. At least we know the fish are finally here. Better late than never!
