Fishing Report by Sue Foster
Water Temperature (WTMP): 75.7 °F°
Fishing this week was good on flounder though there's a lot of "shorts" out
there. Surf fishing has been mostly small stuff like spot, kingfish, and
croaker. Good action for kids with Fishbites or bloodworms. Sharks and big
rays for pullage... Route 50 Bridge has had a good bite of bluefish at
night and early morning. Sea bass are biting offshore, with catches more
flounder. Oceanic Pier has had and croaker action with lots of shad at
night. Crabbing is still happening...Offshore, still good tuna fishing...
(Please read the info about the new MD Saltwater License at the end of this
report. The state set up the tackle stores in Ocean City and anglers can now
buy their MD licenses and boat license stickers at both our locations.)
Please bring cash to buy licenses. If you want to buy and print your license
online, I have all the links where you can do this at the bottom of this

We're still getting reports of Norfolk spot in the surf along with catches
of kingfish, sand perch, croaker and a rare snapper blue. Anglers are using
bloodworms, Fishbite Bloodworms, and little pieces of squid or fresh bunker
for these panfish. Lots of big rays and smaller skates whether you want them
or not. Sharks are around with the larger ones biting at night. (Sandbar,
sand tigers, and duskies are the sharks that anglers are catching and
releasing.)
"Steve Maranto" posted on the 10th: "Fished the 4th of July week in DE and
had the same experience as Sharkhunter. Found the spot and kings to be very
plentiful throughout the day and they were not at all picky..happy to bite
on FBBW. The few times I added a strip of bait to the FBBW, I ended up with
a horseshoe crab. I don't recall catching these in the past, but have reeled
in my fair share this year. Overall an ejoyable week minus the rain."
"FishDaddy" posted on the 10th: "We smoked the spot and kingfish on Saturday
and Sunday. Did have a few run offs to get the heart pumping. both days."
"RancidPMonk" posted on the 11th: "Fished 3rs yesterday and did pretty good.
Blues, croaker and kings were everywhere, I also noticed alot of people
trying to cast out as far as possible and needless to say they weren't
getting anything. Once the storms rolled in I ran to fenwick and did some
shark fishing since nobody was on the beach. Had a couple pick ups that got
dropped and a nice run that spooled me."
"Sharkhunter" posted on the 7th: "Only had a chance to fish 2 hours
yesterday, so I decided to fish for bait for the next time I will be able to
fish all day. I used a hi/lo rig with J hooks for spot. Using FBBW in 1/2
inch long pieces I was able to catch about 20 spot in the first hour and 3
more the second hour. I think I started fishing during the last of the
outgoing, maybe the second hour was at slack.
"
Some people complained they couldn't catch anything in the surf but they
were using hooks that were too big. Need small #6 hooks or a pre-made
kingfish/spot rig and fish with bloodworms or Fishbites. Early bite in the
surf has been best if it is hot and sunny. Overcast days are great all day
for surf fishing.
If you want to try targeting flounder in the surf, cast out a single or
high/low rig with strips of any kind of cut bait. Cast out and slowly
retrieve back in on the surf. A lead lead and a Swimming Mullet Gulp will
also work.
Many anglers ask about reading the beach when surf fishing. "Poppy" a very
good angler has posted another very good description with pictures on
Stripers Online. Check it out:
Reading the Beach He draws it out completely! If you're not catching
fish in the surf, you need to study this!

If you find it hard to hold bottom try using a "

carry a selection of sputnik sinkers in my tackle box.
Flounder! We're getting reports from all over the bay including the
Thorofare, the main east channel, the Oceanic Pier, and the bay behind
Assateague. Also reports from the Inlet and the South Jetty when it is calm
enough. The bulkhead between 2nd and 4th Streets continues to be a good spot
to target keepers from the shore. Also 9th Street Pier. Anglers are now
catching live spot with little hooks and bloodworms or fishbites and fishing
them on the slacking tides at the bulkhead and piers.
We didn't take any pictures this week, but heard of some keepers caught.
Especially in the West Channel, Inlet, and bay behind Assateague. Thorofare
was mostly "shorts." We heard lots of stories of anglers catching all
"shorts." Just got to fish the high tide (2 hours before and 2 hours after)
and work hard to weed through the "shorts." Some anglers are using large
baits, large Gulp baits, long strips of cut bait or larger live bait to
catch the keepers. Try to fish somewhere where everyone else isn't!
Rt. 50 Bridge! Every time I cross over the Route 50 Bridge to go to work I
see someone fighting a fish! Flounder and bluefish are what I have seen.
There's some keeper flounder and lots of short flounder. Early in the
morning as I cross over at 5:30 A.M. I see anglers with nice bluefish.
Yianni Gagianas and Tyler Sondbery of Oyster Bay Tackle were up there this
week at night and caught several bluefish and saw a couple keeper stripers
caught. Lead head with soft bodies and Got-cha Plugs were the trick.
Captain Jeffrey Grimes of "Helbent Charters" e-mailed in: "Mother nature
chased us off the water early several times this week but without a lot of
rain till late Friday the Flounder bite continued to be very good. The folks
at Oyster Bay told me they have heard of a good Flounder bite in the East
Channel so we started out there and we caught fish on each of our first
several drifts. After a while I was not real happy with the water clarity so
we moved out to the Commercial Harbor and drifted the end of the incoming
tide and we caught fish there on our 1st several passes. Finally we moved
out into the inlet right before slack tide and we caught several bigger fish
there as well! I kept changing up the baits we were offering and we found
different baits worked better at the different locations. In the East
Channel frozen shiners and squid strips worked the best. Out by the
Commercial Harbor Gulp 3" White Minnow worked the best and in the inlet live
minnows worked the best. So what did I learn this week? 1st check with your
local tackle shop and ask them where the bite is. They are there to help and
pass on any information that customers shared with them. 2nd change up the
baits you are using through out the day. Just because a bait works at one
spot does guarantee it will work at another area in the bay. Much needed
rain came to the area early Friday night and continued thru much of the
night. I know I had several inches in my bucket on the boat Saturday
morning. All that rain realley hurt the clarity of the water and the bite
was not as good as earlier in the week. A day or two of no rain and we
should have the water quality improve. See you on the water."

Larry Jock of the Coastal
Fisherman reports on Sunday: "Jack Koslosky caught a 10 lb. 2 oz.
bluefish on live spot in the OC Inlet."Get Sum" had 4 keeper flounder,
caught in the West Channel, during their morning trip. Largest measured
20.75-inches. Caught on Gulp! and bunker. The "Morning Star" returned with a
nice catch of sea bass and flounder. On Saturday, " Bay Bee"
had 6 keeper flounder from the bay behind Assateague during their afternoon
trip. Anglers recorded 125 throwbacks."
Oceanic Pier (410-289-2602) is now open (no fishing license required when
fishing on this pier) and anglers are catching lots of flounder but keepers
are hard to come by. Friday the pier had 3 or 4 keepers but most days
anglers are catching one or two keepers. Croaker have also hit the pier
more consistently this week. Anglers are catching them by day and also at
night. There's been live spot and little sea bass for the kids to catch.
Some tautog have been caught at the very end and left hand corner of the
pier. At night the shad run was surprising good this week. A few blues, and
croaker are biting at night. Anglers catch blues and shad on
Spec Rigs and
Got-cha Plugs. J.J. comments that anglers are also catching crabs. One
family had two dozen. Another family had a dozen. J.J. wants everyone to
know that when you come to the pier, go to the Oceanic Motel and park, then
come buy your ticket and he will give you a pass for your car. There is also
a big municipal pay lot about a block away from the pier. Call the Oceanic
Pier at 410-289-2602 for parking details.
Old Inlet (302-227-7974) posted on July 5th : "Plenty of spot on the surf.
Bloodworms. Good tuna bite in the Poormans. Joe VanSant released a 500 plus
blue marlin as well. Heard several reports of good flounder fishing in the
bay as well as plenty of small blues. Best striper fishing is at night with
all of the heat nad boat traffic during the day. Live eels and lures on the
incoming tide and floating fleas on the outgoing."
Bill Sports Center in Lewes, DEL (302-645-7654) reports: "Kingfish and
croaker were reported from the surf. Flounder are biting on Spec Rigs and
Gulp! Yellowfin are biting in the Canyons."
Lewes Harbour Marina (302-645-6227) reports on July 7th: "
Flounder catches have been pretty good for guys who know how to work rough
bottom structure. The rocks and sea trees of the Old Grounds between DB and
DA Buoys, as well as the rubble of reef sites 9 and 10 have been holding
fluke, and savvy fishermen have found that modifications to standard rigging
helps them catch more flatties amongst that kind of cover. According to
Captain Ricky Yakimowicz, short leaders are the key. He said a 3 to 4 ounce
bucktail with a hair teaser on a 4 inch leader about a foot ahead of the jig
works well. He mentioned that flukers also had success employing a rig with
a sinker as heavy as necessary to maintain contact with the bottom, and a
hair teaser hook on a short dropper about 6 to 8 inches above the weight.
The jigs or hooks get sweetened with a strip of squid, shark, bluefish, a
shiner, smelt, Gulp! or any combination of these. Anglers should constantly
bounce the rigs as they drift through the chunky grounds and be alert for
the quick strike of a flatfish lying in ambush. The jigging action seems to
provoke more aggressive strikes than when baits are drug casually over the
bottom, and flounder just hang on while deciding to swallow or not. The
short leadered setups are also less likely to get snagged....Triggerfish and
sheepshead have shown up in warm water the Ice Breakers.... Tuna catches
have slowed compared to the good bite over the past two weeks. However,
chunkers did catch some bluefins in Massey's Canyon. Yellowfins popped up in
the Baltimore and Poor Man's Canyons, but not in numbers like before. Good
sized dolphin have been taken. "

Capt. Monty on the "
Morning Star" is now fishing for sea bass daily. Call for
reservations. 410 520 2076. Here's his report: Hi All,
A varied week; Catches from not-so-much to very fine indeed. Sunday I even
had one fellow with more than 20 keeper sea bass..
Our special 12 hour trip Saturday started with a couple beautiful cbass and
a lost-at-boatside keeper cod -- then the day fell in a heap for about 4
hours!
Despite a light rail I had decided to fish way-out & deep. The current, easy
the previous day, was full bore.. 16 ounces held bottom only briefly in the
strong tidal flow.
Amazingly, with almost 20 knots of wind the boat laid to the current on
anchor: Typically I'd not even factor current with that much wind.
Mate Mike summed up one part of the boat thusly: "They only had one tangle,
but it lasted 4 hours."
So we picked along, doing our best with a poor situation: I knew the tide
would change.
Ripping still; the current finally rolled halfway around the compass.
South & settled, velocity lessened; The fish came out of hiding -- Hungry.
On the way home we had a screaming run-off, a large tuna. 300 yards of 80
pound line later Mr. Murphy laughed as the tuna flipped us a fin and went
back to life as a super predator.
One of these days..
Another fish, summer flounder, answered to twitch-twitch on Sunday. Caught a
few up to 4 1/2 pounds on Gulps & cut bait with the biggest on clam.
Game-on any day. . . . . . . . . "

report from July 3rd: "Captain Victor Bunting on the Ocean Princess reports
that he has still been picking up a mix of both keeper and throw back sea
bass over the last week. We are starting to see a few more nice flounder
coming in and have probably landed a dozen keepers in the last few days.
The occasional triggerfish is also being caught, just not as frequently as I
would like. I would expect to see a few more of these scrappy fighting fish
over the next week. Of course we had a couple trips this week where it has
been tough to put a real good catch together, but I would say that we have
definitely seen more good days than bad."
The Angler Party Boat is now running
! Capt Chris Mizurak reports on the 5th: "We had another good week on
Angler, with some great weather and good fishing. Most days we have been
drifting natural bottom and have had steady action with lots of throwbacks
and some nice keepers. We did have one slow day in the mix, but most people
still managed to get a few keepers. We are still catching a few cod fish,
and we have also seen a few more flounder. We are sailing daily from
730am-2pm.The cost is $62 which includes rod, reel, and bait. Please call

Capt. Rick Yakimowicz of the "Thelma Dale V" Reports from Fisherman's Wharf
on July 7th:
The fishing grind continues here at the Wharf and after a long holiday
weekend it pains me to report that my fishing over the last few days has not
been nearly as hot as the weather. I have without doubt seen some very good
Flounder fishing over these past seven days including one of my best
Flounder drifts of the year just this past weekend, but the numbers of the
fish that we have been able to keep have definitely dwindled for me
especially during my last three days of fishing.
Up in the Delaware Bay the fishing continues to be pretty spotty. The boats
bound to Bay have certainly seen a few good days on the Flounder but it has
been very inconsistent to say the least. I was actually up in the Bay
fishing one day last week and we saw some half decent action with the
Flounders along with a plethora of Sand Sharks and other junk fish but every
other day I have been fishing the Ocean. There are a few Croakers around up
in the Bay now but not enough to say we are catching them to any amount.
Capt. Mike reports decent action on his Half-Day trips in the lower end and
in the mouth of the Bay but not much to bring home with them. They have been
catching Sharks, Skates, Oyster Crackers, Blowfish and Kingfish along with
the occasional Croaker. Capt. Mike is doing the Croaker dance daily on each
trip from his upper deck and feels that in the next couple weeks there will
be enough of them around to target making his trips go much smoother.
The full summer schedule remains here at the Wharf with Half-Day trips
sailing daily at 8:00, 1:00 and then again at 6:00 p.m. with the evening
run. They will be targeting anything that will bend a rod until these
Croakers show up in force. My All-Day trips we be sailing daily at 7:00 a.m.
and I will be targeting primarily the Flounders fishing over the rocky
ledges and coral bottoms of the old grounds.

Capt.Dan Stauffer (866-623-4746) of the Fin Chaser does wreck,
inlet and trolling trips. Here's a couple of his reports to get you a taste
of what he has to offer:
07/06/11 A trip to the deep with four anglers from PA looking for tuna.
Made a fifteen minute stop on the way out to try for a Bluefin but nothing
happened. Ran east for another 45 minutes and set the spread. A few minutes
later was get attacked by two tiny Mahi, not even big enough for a sandwich
or to take the hook. Big enough though, to destroy our baits. An hour later,
one of our riggers get hit. Five minutes later we have a "BLT" (barely legal
tuna) Yellowfin in the box. A little later I spot a large orange plastic
barrel floating loaded with beautiful, tasty, Triggerfish. We break-out the
spinners and spend the next hour or so having a blast putting 25 Triggers,
some jumbo size, in the box. Set the trolling spread back out and after
another hour we get hit by two nice Yellowfin, both make it in the box. With
less than 30 minutes left in the day our short rigger get slammed and
another Yellowfin goes in the box. Back in the slip with 25 Triggers and 4
Yellowfin Tuna.
07/07/11 Headed east for some Yellowfin action with these four guys from PA.
Ten miles under our belt one crew members is already down. This guy has been
offshore three times and struck with the dreaded twelve hour illness every
time but with new medication, wanted to try it again. At the twenty mile
mark, he's in bad shape. The rest of the guys decide to hang close and try
for some Bluefin. Lines are out for ten minutes and we have a small Mahi in
the box. Twenty minutes later one of the baits get slammed and we put a 50
lb. Bluefin in the box. Unfortunately, during the fight, another crew member
goes down. Less than 3 hours into the day I'm told to head in. As we're
clearing the lines, one of the short riggers get hit. A few minutes later we
release a 30 lb. Bluefin.
07/02/11 Took a crew of five out for an eight hour Bluefin trip. Ran 90
minutes to where we had our action a few days ago. Arrived to find too many
boats and too few fish. After two hours with only three bites and one fish,
I decided to make a seven mile move based on a hunch I had. Lines were out
for less than ten minutes before we have our first fish on. The next few
hours was great, fish about every fifteen minutes. Total by days end was
nine Bluefin with a 45 lb. fish in the box and some very happy anglers.

The "Morning Star" returned with a nice catch of sea bass and flounder.

Maryland Fishing License
Anglers fishing in Ocean City will need to purchase a saltwater fishing
license. This license will cover both the Chesapeake Bay and the coastal
waters and surf of Ocean City and Assateague Island. Yes, this includes surf
fishing. If you already have a Chesapeake Bay Saltwater license you are good
to go! Anglers will be able to purchase the license online. The
license you want to choose is "Bay and Coastal Sport" You can either choose
a year-round or 7-day. The online site will add on a small convenience fee.
The state has set the tackle stores up with paper licenses so we can do your
licenses in our stores.
If you know you are coming to Ocean City, and you want to get it done ahead
of time you can
also call a toll free number (1-800-918-2870)
or print and mail in an application. Boat
Licenses: $50 and everyone on your boat can go
fishing without a license. You will get a personal license along with your
boat license, so you can go shore fishing as well. They will send you your
sticker for your boat in the mail. If you come to our stores, we have the
stickers.
Mail the application to their main office:
Maryland Dept. of Natural resources

P.O. Box 1869
1804 West Street, Suite 300
Annapolis, MD 21401
If you are going to be fishing on a private boat with someone who has a Boat
License, you don't have to buy a license, but you do have to register online. This
is free but cannot be done over the phone. (The state says it has no money
for a phone line.) Print out your number and keep an id with
you when you go fishing. You can also download it to your smart phone and
show it to the DNR officer.
It only takes a couple minutes. If you have no printer or smart phone, write
down the authorization number.
Another interesting note about the license is that if you buy a VA license,
it is good in MD, and vice versa. If you are fishing in MD with a VA licence
you do need to register with MD online. Again, this is free. This is so each
state can "try" to figure out "how many" fish are being caught in their own
individual states. (VA Free
Registry)
If you want to go fishing in Ocean City without a license, your choices will
be the "Oceanic Pier" or to go fishing on a party or charter boat. You can
also go crabbing and clamming in Ocean City without a license. Or you can
fish off your own private dock.
